Song meaning of Same Love by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (Ft. Mary Lambert)

Oh, Same Love, the song that makes homophobes cringe and back away slowly. Macklemore starts off with a confession that as a third-grader, he thought he was gay because he could draw and kept his room tidy. Classic mix-up, right? He tells his mom, and she quips back that he's loved girls since before pre-k, which means he's probably straight. Macklemore then goes off on a tangent about how society has a pre-conceived notion of what it means to be gay and how the right-wing conservatives think it's a decision, and you can be cured with some "treatment" and religion. Yeah, right. Then he comes to the realization that hip-hop probably hates him if he were gay and recalls all the "man that's gay" comments he sees on YouTube videos. He discusses how we've become so numb to what we're saying and how "gay" is treated as a lesser word. Then he talks about human rights and the fact that we're all equal, whether we're gay, straight, black, white, or any other color under the sun. Love is patient, love is kind, and the same goes for everyone. That's the message here.
